Standing near the center of the Green, those who are far-sighted can faintly see, in the opening to the Hood.Museum arid the Hood's' Bedford Courtyard, a most recognizable Statue that has greeted Hood visitors for the past six years. It is the bronze by the internation ally famoussculptor Joel Shapiro, titled untitled (Hood Museum of Art). Shapiro-obviously more at home with his art than with what he names it—is a leader in the Minimalist movement, that body of art that stimulates the viewer's personal reaction to the work rather than to the artist's technique. It's hard not to be impressed with the skill thai enabledShapirotoweld this sculpture's massive five arms into a 21-foothigh masterpiece.A true Minimalist might instead See in it a gyrating ice skater landing gracefully after a triple loop; a headless monster lying in wait for an unsuspecting passer-by; a courteous student pointing, for a stranger, the way to the Hop. 'Shapiro's work can be found in museums and collections around the world. We wonder how many are tided untitled.
