The performance of Gretchen Ulion '94 and Sarah Tueting '98 on the U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey team gave me plenty to cheer about amidst the doom and gloom currently dished out by the media. The former scored the first goal in the championship match against Canada, then assisted on the second gold-medal-winning goal, while the latter in goal stopped 21 of 22 shots. I suggest that many of you might contribute to the Athletic Sponsor Program to help recruit outstanding prospects like these. Some thoughtful recollections came from Gordon Carver on his experience with Dartmouth football. He had been a tackle on his high school state championship team, so Sid Hazleton put him on our first team until his lack of size (165 pounds) dropped him to our third team. Not being able to keep awake to study because of the long practice sessions, he became fearful of flunking out, a. catastrophe for his family. Accordingly he left the squad to get his studies in shape, then considered going out for the varsity his junior year when his weight had increased to 205 pounds, but ultimately decided against doing so. During the Depression he played semi-pro ball, and still loves the game.

Previously I had failed to mention that Spence Cram had reserved a seat on the flight taken by the U.S. Figure Skating team to the world championship competition in Czechoslovakia in 1961. Business plans caused Spence to cancel. You will recall that plane crashing, killing all aboard.
