This is all about two former diners in Hanover, one still going in Fairfax, Va. yeah, that's where I live; a pink panther police chase in Fairfax County, Va., right across the Potomac from Washington, D.C.; and a taxi-using robber in the same county. These are the kinds of facts (news?) you have been waiting for (please note dangling preposition). Apparently, long after we left Hanover, there were these diners there. There was the Streamliner, known as the greaseliner, noted for its ground-round Salisbury steak dished up with mashed potatoes and lots of bread. Then there was the Hanover Diner, tossing around hearts of lettuce salad, slices of winter tasteless tomato, and ale, the salad awash in mayonnaise; great deal. Both got sold away, and the Town of Hanover won't stand for a McDonald's. Look what we missed in College, when even the rich were poor. Here in the City of Fairfax we have the Tasty Diner; in front there is a marker which says it is an historic edifice. You sit at the counter, roll 'round and 'round on the stool. Should see my grandson, Kevin, who is seven, do away with bowls of cereal and a pint of milk, while I surround three six-inch flapjacks all gooey with imitation maple syrup, $4.98. Then on one Fairfax County day, with "syreens" screaming, three police cars tore down the interstate and corralled a "loose goose" quietly minding its own business marching down the center divider on the way to Richmond 80 miles down the road. On the same day a "gencab so-called in the newspapers, hired a cab and went to the bank, told the driver to wait, went in, and emerged with a briefcase full of money, got in the cab, and left. Police are investigating. Oh my!
Dorothy Earl Writes to express much appreciation for the class memorial book placed in Baker Libraiy for Ralph. Peg Carter (Ray Reitman) writes, letting us all know her daughters are Meg, Liz, and Kit, and granddaughters are Kim '87, Dana, and Kristy. The fall class of '36 gathering is the Harvard game weekend, Friday, October 30, 1998, with the meeting of the executive committee, great companionship, ship, two great dinner parties. Genuine fan. Plan to come.
