In a labor of love Marc Alvarez spends much of his spare time as publications director of SABRE, the Society for American Baseball Research. This 7,000-member organization is dedicated to, among other things, establishing accurate accounts of baseball through the years and coordinating and disseminating baseball research information. It has two annual publications, The Baseball Research Journal, which is more statistical and analytical in nature, and The National Pastime, which takes a more historical, scholarly approach. Marc joined in 1984 and assumed his current responsibilities in 1991. "I edit, write, and publish the final product. The process is fascinating, and I learn something new about the game every day, it seems. The level of scholarship in the organization is very high." Marc is the author of The Old Ball Game, a book on nineteenth-century baseball.
