Head agent John Todd should have final numbers on the '99 Alumni Fund and, as usual, another outstanding performance for the class of 1935. Way back in April our class had surpassed a goal of $100,000 and John reported some 63 regular givers were yet to be heard from. Great news, indeed. Now for other items:

Ted Harbaugh writes about a "mini reunion" he and wife Kay convened in July in Highland Park, Ill., with Herb Ostrow and Mel Rothschild, who live in the Chicago area. Kay is a Suzuki violin teacher and she and Ted were in Deerfield, Ill., attending the Suzuki Institute at Trinity International University. Ted's letter is a fascinating tale of undergraduate experiences, "with Dartmouth in mind we had such a good time getting acquainted again."

Doug and Ruth Ley are residing at Brookhaven in Lexington, Mass., and he writes that both have applied for admission to the new assisted living quarters at the retirement community. (Ruth died Aug. 13, 1999; she was 85.) Correspondence from the widows committee includes comment from Gladys Lazarus (Ralph) in Cincinnati about the death of Eleanor Smith (Dave), "I'm losing so many of my contemporaries." Peg Whytlaw (Lou) attended a family reunion in Palatine, Ill., and became acquainted with "great-nieces and -nephews (one was from Glen, N.H.) I'd forgotten all about." Jean Sewall (Charlie) keeps on the go and in August was booked for a trip through the Northwest Passage. Edith Holmes (Walt) of Nashua, N.H., wrote in February about how she merged her family with Walt's in 1962 (three of his kids, two of hers) after her husband (Walt's brother Kenneth) died in 1956 and Walt lost his wife Lucy in 1959. Edith said she was awaiting "momentarily" her first grandchild in Ohio (the youngster must be walking). A letter from Marge Knap(Joe) in Bay Village, Ohio, said getting any- where from there is "daunting" hence she was not available for this fall's mini-reunion in Hanover. Carolyne Ziemen (Sax) of Bloomfield, Conn., had much the same report on reunions, writing that "minis" are not for her but she is holding open attending the 65th in June 2000.

Jack Kingery, Evanston, Ill., died May 7, 1999. "Dartmouth was a very important part of my father's life," according to his daughter Lucinda Lenhardt, who said her two sons "made wise choices to come to Hanover and carry on the family legacy."
