The saddest part of my new duty is reporting the deaths of classmates three have just come to our attention: Fran Fenn reports the July 30,1999, death of Dana C. Douglass Jr. in Bethel, Maine. Dana was a leader in his church and in his town, and served the State of Maine on its soil and water conservation board. Thomas David Duff died on June 10,1999, in Seneca, S.C. He was a charter member of the Dartmouth Rowing Club, coxwain of the first varsity crew, and a member of the Rowing Club Hall of Fame. James Winslow Hathaway died on Jan. 22, 1999, in Littleton, Colo. Jim spent many years as a senior executive at Allstate Insurance Cos.
Our Royal K. Abbott Jr. was "Doc" and beloved mentor to Robert Hallenbeck '01 of Stamford, Conn. Rob says his Boy Scout days with Royal prepared him for his active membership in the Ledyard Canoe Club, where he has his own kayak.
Ann Malenka '80 is now director of public programs for the College, a very interesting assignment. She keeps her eyes peeled for '37 mentions. She reports that Christine Crabb '90, her assistant director, is the granddaughter of Robert J. Crabb.
Just heard the athletic director report on the joys and sorrows of trying to recruit good athletes when big money deals are not available. He still seems optimistic and hopeful!
