As always, the class of 1925 shines in its endowed scholarship funds. Susan Howard, associate director of financial aid, says in a letter to LarryLeavitt, "How truly invaluable funds such as these are in enabling needy students to pursue their Dartmouth education."
Jenna Levine '01, one of the recipients, a major in biology, with a possible double major in drama, says that the fund has made attending Dartmouth much less of a financial problem, for which she is very grateful. She was assistant stage manager for two shows at Dartmouth last year and plans to stage manage further productions. She is involved in the Tucker Foundation's Big Brother Big Sister program and also has an 11-year-old Little Sister. Last year she was employed as an office assistant in the Baker Library interlibrary loan office and is continuing there this year. She is the programming assistant for the Topliff/New Hampshire residential cluster.
Seth Kelly '99, recipient of the Duncan Sleigh endowed scholarship, spent the fall term of 1997 studying philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. The course required five essays and weekly seminar meetings in addition to regular course work. He says that although the time required for academics on the foreign study program was greater than that of a regular Dartmouth term, he still found time to see much of the United Kingdom and Europe. This year he was elected president of the Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity and has, among his goals, "the desire to renew the fraternity's commitment to community service, to develop a better relationship with the administration and alumni, to revise the role that alcohol plays in his fraternity, and to promote activities that make the brotherhood itself more cohesive."
Seth is also currently involved in a local search and rescue organization, on the medical team, and was appointed safety director for the fall of 1998s freshmen trip programs. He is secretary of the Order of Omega, a national Greek honor society devoted to improving the image of Greek letter organizations through community service and improvement of faculty and administration relations. He also writes and edits for Aporia, the student philosophy journal. Seth says that his most important experience this year was his internship with the New Hampshire End of Life Project based at the Dartmouth Medical School, which deals with ways to improve such care in New Hampshire. His interest may lead to a career in the health care field but exactly which path he will take "still remains a mystery." He does know, however, that he will serve as a senior interviewer in the admissions office in the fall.
These are but two examples of what the class of 1925 has been and is doing for Dartmouth students.
