This month's column comes courtesy of Paula McLeod, who is returning to Chicago after seven years in Singapore and three and a half in Hong Kong. "Looking forward to better sports facilities and other pleasures of stateside life. I have been working for A.T. Kearney but will stop while I help everybody get settled. We have bought a house in Winnetka. It is the first house we have bought (have lived in apartments except two years in a large black-and-white Southeast Asian colonial house set on what seemed to be an acre of semi jungle in Singapore. The termites once crept through the floorboards and ate a straight line four feet across an Oriental rug overnight! But that was before we moved to the relative civilization of Hong Kong. During our recent five-day, househunting mad dash (complete with huge jetlag that had me rising at 4 a.m. every morning to check the Internet and thereby completely frustrate my real estate agent!), I could not get Jamie to come inside the houses. He kept lingering outside admiring the grass and the trees. (Me, I want to see that kitchen with that garbage disposal and subzero refrigerator. My, how the traditional roles do eventually get the best of us.) Jamie and I will go to Vietnam this weekend with the purpose of buying some art. We'll see what comes of that! When we move, we will say goodbye to our live-in nanny of nine years, and that will really be a reality check. Anyone else who has transitioned back to the States? Comments and observations please..."(I second that!) That's all for now. Please e-mail, fax, write, call.
