When I turned 501 realized I wasn't happy practicing law," says former corporate lawyer Bob Conklin '60. So he left his practice in 1989 to buy Timber Press, a publishing company devoted to his major passion, gardening. Ten years later Timber Press is the leading gardenbook publishing company in the United States. Among the new crop of Timber Press books are The Well-Tended Perennial Garden, Herbs in Bloom,, and TheTropical Look. Sales are flourishing: up from $1.5 million in 1989 to almost $6 million in 1998. So are his gardens. His 600 orchids alone fill two greenhouses.
Conklin took time to smell the roses.
