The winter issue of the Dartmouth Medical School News and Notes features a fine picture of the Freidman medical dynasty. "The eyes definitely have it.. .not only are there three generations of physicians in the family, each with ties to Dartmouth, but all three are ophthalmologists. Pictured are Alan J. Freidman, DC '56, DMS '57, and Harvard Medical School '59; Joseph J. Freidman, DMS '28 Johns Hopkins '30; and Neil J. Freidman '88, Harvard Medical School '92" a distinguished and unique group indeed!
Dr. Joe Gonnella, senior VP and dean at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, has received the Abraham Flexner Award, the most prestigious award presented annually by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The award cites Joe's "extraordinary contributions to the medical school and the medical education as a whole. Dr. Gonnella is a strong force in medical education, capable of influencing both students and faculty to strive for the best. He has greatly enhanced Jefferson's reputation as a research institution and increased its grant support." Clem Malin has hit the lecture circuit. In November he spoke to the League of Women Voters in Weston, Conn., about the emerging set of rules and regulations to reduce emissions and what they will mean to U.S. business, the economy, and our collective future. Clem is head of the delegation for the International Chamber of Commerce to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. He was a delegate to the global environment conference in Kyoto last year and recently returned from die fourth session of the Framework Convention in Buenos Aires. Prior to joining Texaco in 1978 he worked for the Federal Energy Administration as assistant administrator for international energy affairs.
As this is written, the story has been released from Hanover regarding the changes to the fraternity/sorority system enacted by the Trustees. I would appreciate hearing from readers of this column regarding their thoughts on this subject.
