I received a nice note about Ken Lieberthal from his wife, Jane, including more detail regarding his recent appointment as special assistant to the president and senior director for Asian affairs at the National Security Council. As previously reported, Ken was appointed by National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger. Prior to this appointment, he had served on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 1983 and had earlier taught at Swarthmore from 1972 to 1983. After Dartmouth Ken received his master's and Ph.D. degrees in political science from Columbia. He is the author of numerous books and articles, primarily on China, and has served as a consultant for the departments of State and Commerce, the World Bank, the Rand Corp., the Kettering Foundation, and the Aspen Institute.
Bill Webster passed along news that Carl Boe, as the next step in his long career at IBM, is now involved with the new flat-screen monitors and their sales to the brokerage industry. If you have not seen these new monitors, they are really remarkable, and I assume Bill and his firm will buy lots of them from Carl. Bill also related the news that Mike Orr has a new career of sorts raising Portuguese water hounds and he loves it! Apparently he has already helped raise one family, sold them, and enjoyed it so much he is raising another. I am sure that it has not escaped Mike that this new little hobby might raise havoc with his golf handicap. Maybe not, however, if he simply lets the hounds join him on the course!
As some of you may know, one of my business partners, Steve Waterhouse, has just purchased a new home in Vail, Colo. Steve and Linda are always on the move with other homes in Hanover, London, and New York, but it sounds as though Vail will become a more permanent home for them. As luck would have it, their first winter there, the snow has been a little sparse but they have enjoyed it nonetheless. Perhaps, with Steve's knowledge of the area, Vail might be a future sign for a class minireunion. By the time you receive this issue, our class will have enjoyed the annual out-of-Hanover mini-reunion in Bermuda. I understand the turnout will be excellent and the weather should be perfect. Look for news in the next column.
At a recent class officers meeting president Jim Griffiths requested that any classmates who wish to nominate a fellow '65 or other Dartmouth alumnus for the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center's Annual Award contact Linda Fowler, wife of Steve Fowler and director of the Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth. Nominees should have distinguished themselves in public service to local, state, federal, or international communities.
As you read this, we are entering the home stretch for this year's Alumni Fund drive. Hank Amon and his agents are hard at work again looking to maintain and improve upon our class's already high standards. Please be generous in supporting the College on behalf of our class.
