The April 29 edition of the PR Newswire brought news that Michael Flannery, president and chief operating officer of Pope and Talbot, will be promoted to chief executive officer succeeding Peter Pope, effective August 1,1999. The article went on to say that Mike has more than 25 years of experience in the forest products industry. Prior to joining Pope and Talbot in 1986, he had been with Champion International, where he was vice president of Wood Products Manufacturing. At Pope and Talbot Mike was instrumental in repositioning the firm away from consumer products to focus on the pulp and lumber businesses. Pope and Talbot is a publicly held Portland, Ore.based pulp and wood products company traded on the New York Stock Exchange. After Dartmouth Mike graduated from the Harvard Business School.

I had a nice visit recently with HankAmon and his wife, Karen, at our son Jon's wedding in Greenwich, Conn. They both looked great and mentioned that they had decided to purchase a ski house at Whistler in British Columbia during a ski trip out there this past winter perhaps a potential locale for a future class mini-reunion! Also in attendance at the wedding were AllenZern and his wife, Judy, just back from a bicycle trip on the island of Corsica. We could not help but at least tentatively plan our next trip (New Zealand was fabulous). Jon is class of '96 at Dartmouth and a PsiU, so the Big Green was well represented at the wedding.

Your class executive committee will be meeting at Bill Webster's beautiful Connecticut summer home on Saturday, July 10. Judging from president JimGriffiths' ambitious agenda for the meeting, we may all be there until Aug. 10. Subjects to be discussed include: planning for the next year's 35th Reunion (can you believe it?), our North Campus landscaping project, future out-of-Hanover reunions, other class projects, increased use of our class website, and all of the various committee reports. A round of golf will precede all of this. Highlights will be reported in next month's column.

When you are next in Hanover, be sure and visit the new Rauner Special Collections Library in Webster Hall. It is truly spectacular! Pick up a copy of the "Brochure of the Class of 1965 Galleries." Because our class gave the largest class gift for a building project in the history of Dartmouth College, the College has created this special brochure. It will be available as a handout for all future visitors to our galleries. Our successful completion of the funding of this project has launched a significant new fundraising approach for the College naming large building projects on behalf of a sponsoring class. A great class accomplishment!

Hope you happened to catch the excellent article in the June edition of this magazine on our own Heinz Kluetmeier. The article asked: "What does it take to be an outstanding photojournalist?" Heinz, cited as being "one of the planet's preeminent sports photographers," is described pursuing photographs for a feature on China's "icy sports" as the Chinese call skating and sledding. A great read about a great talent!
