In February, Scott Smith became our first (I believe) Academy Award nominee from the class. He was honored for Evriting the screen adaptation of his own novel, A Simple Plan.

My predecessor on these pages, MegCrone Ramsden, is now reporting on life and educational events for the Harrington(R.I.) Times. She has been a volunteer in the Barrington public schools and most recently has been writing for The Prospect, the alumni magazine of Providence Country Day School. She and husband Chris '84 have two children and live in Barrington.

Chris Baker has checked in from the Bay Area. He is vice president of development for Chevys Fresh Mex Restaurants, a chain with 90 locations. He and his wife have just bought a house in San Francisco, not a minor undertaking in that soaring real estate market. (There are an awful lot of '87s in San Francisco if y'all want to put together a mini-reunion, maybe Chris could get you a group discount on margaritas! Contact me or class president Joe Voves if you would like to see an '87 mini-reunion in your area and you are willing to help make it happen.) Chris also sends word of Marc Baranski. He recently completed his Ph.D. in zoology and is spending the next several years at the London Zoo studying the reproduction of giant pandas. His goal is to reintroduce breeding pairs of pandas into the wild in China within ten to 15 years.

The most interesting balancing act I've heard about recently belongs to Amy KellerGleed. She was remarried in 1997 to policeman Scott Gleed, and is raising stepson Ryan along with her daughters Jesse and Cynthia in Sandown, N.H. She spends lots of time shuttling the gang to art and dance lessons, skiing, and scouting, and has been drafted as the official Brownie troop cookie mom. In her spare time, Amy also works full time for defense contractor Sonetech Corp., where she is a program manager using new acoustics technology in military applications. She is currently working on "parametric airborne dipping sonar," which she describes as a new helicopter dipping sonar for use in both antisubmarine warfare missions and mine countermeasure missions. Amy says that although she has resigned her military commission after over ten years, she still loves nailing the bad guys. You go, girl!

Another hard-working mom I've heard from recently is Mary Crawford McGriff. Last May she and husband Sammie welcomed their third son, Samuel. He joins Joshua 7 and David 4. In December she completed her master's degree in educational administration, and has been working as a teacher for the past seven years. She and Sammie also celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in December surely she's among just a few of us to have reached that milestone already!

News was passed along to me that PaulGuerre has been admitted to partnership with the firm of Warner Norcross & Judd in Grand Rapids, Mich. Paul received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Notre Dame and specializes in the areas of corporate and securities law, including mergers and acquisitions. He and wife Traci have one son, Nicholas.

Finally, Tom Foote asked me to share with you the news that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about a year ago. His symptoms so far are mostly cognition-related, affecting his memory and concentration, but physically he is fit enough to do quite a bit of cross-country skiing around his home in Ashland, N.H. I would be happy to put any classmates in touch with Tom who would like to contact him.
