Joan Hier '01 is the fourth generation of Hiers to enjoy the images of her photographer great-grandfather Frederick. And, thanks to her grandfather, Fritz Hier'44, visitors to the Hood Museum can take them in through exhibits and classes. More than 20 years ago, Fritz gave the Hood Museum a collection of 57 photographs, photogravures, and etchings by his father and such celebrated photographers as Alfred Stieglitz (The Steerage), Alvin Coburn (August Rodin), and Edward Steichen (TheFlatiron—Evening). Five of these works were hung last fall for the "Signs of Modern Life," an exhibition organized in conjunction with a class taught by adjunct professor and former New York Times photography critic Andy Grundberg.
