The Dartmouth team had managed two victories against four defeats after its first month of play, and indications were that the final season tally would be better than the experts thought last fall.

Army's highly regarded team took the measure of Dartmouth 8-1 in Hanover on January 21. Lone Green winner was Greg Cook '69 of Hamden, Conn. Showing exceptional accuracy on his rail and corner shots, he controlled the match from the start and won in three quick games.

As Coach John Kenfield works to rebuild squash at Dartmouth, Cook will figure in future plans. He is regarded as a player of precision who has not yet reached his full potential.

BIG GREEN BITS ... Relations between Eastern schools and the rest of the country were not improved by the action at the National Collegiate Athletic Association convention refusing to throw out the 1.6 eligibility rule regarding student athletes' grades. The Ivy League especially opposes the rule on grounds that it violates institutional autonomy, and individual Ivy League college academic requirements are considerably higher than the 1.6 average.

Barring later compromises, Ivy institutions will not be able to compete for national titles because the institutions refuse to state that they conform to the 1.6 rule.

Freshman basketball team captain is Philip Cleve Penberthy of Rowayton, Conn., son of Philip Penberthy '42. Two other alumni sons also are on the team: Judd Burnham of Bethesda, Md., son of Don Burnham '44, noted track recordholder, and John R. McKernan of Bangor, Me., son of the late John McKernan '36.

Mickey Beard '67 of Newton, Mass., and Wynn Mabry '67 of Enid, Okla., last month were named, respectively, offensive and defensive backs of the year by the New England College Football Coaches Association. They were honored January 28 at a Boston luncheon.

Beard set Dartmouth records for career total offensive yardage, career passing yardage, season passing yardage and season touchdown completions. Mabry was named to five first teams: Coaches All-Ivy, Associated Press All-Ivy, Associated Press All-East, Associated Press All-New England, and Hearst All-New England.

One of Karl Michael's up-and-coming sophomore freestylers is Dave Jacobsen of Miami, Fla., whose father is Peter Jacobsen '41 and whose mother is the daughter of Sydney Clark '12.

Alden "Whitey" Burnham, varsity soccer and lacrosse coach, has been named to the executive committee of the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. He also is president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
