The end of the academic year brings to a close long careers in education for a couple of classmates. Pete Tower's daughter, Erika '98, sent me an e-mail note indicating that he had retired from his post at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols after 40 years as a teacher and coach. And in Trumbull, Conn., Ted Merritt stepped down as superintendent of schools. Ted had been a superintendent of schools in Pennsylvania and Connecticut since 1971. Congratulations guys!
After 33 years in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., Alan McQuiston and Betsy have moved to a condominium in Southbury, Conn. Al is now semi-retired from Hodes-Daniel in Elmsford, N.Y., and has his own business designing and writing direct mail advertising promotions.
Pete Hesbacher and Phil Calkins, along with their spouses, will be traveling together this summer through New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Phil says they will visit his roommate John Lensen in Santa Fe, and he promises to send a note about their travels for the column.
Larry Hampton and Helga both registered with a businessman's Peace Corps-type volunteer organization called British Executive Service Overseas (BESO), and he spent nine days in Moscow under its auspices conducting a seminar on consumer goods marketing. They both expect to spend two weeks in Bosnia soon working with BESO through the International Catholic Migration Commission. Helga will be teaching, translating and interpreting, and Larry will help small businesses get on their feet.
After a year of commuting 200 miles each way three weeks of the month, Hal Bernsen moved the headquarters of his company from Alexandria to Virginia Beach, Va. Hal notes his timing was poor since I am joining Independent Educational Services, a firm in Alexandria, on a part-time basis, but there still may be an opportunity for get-togethers in Old Town.
Speaking of get-togethers, it isn't too early to mark your calendars for the Dartmouth Night mini-reunion gathering in Hanover on Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23. The foliage may be just past its peak in the North Country, but still beautiful. Details will be forthcoming from chairman Joe Jacquet, so make plans to be there. The class meeting will be held that Saturday morning, and, along with other business, we need to commit to a class project. Your assignment for that meeting is to submit proposals for consideration. Thus far my plea in a past column has produced only one suggestion, thanks to Nick Stevens, and we need more to consider.
