On July 17 your class officers enjoyed a productive meeting in Old Saybrook, Conn., at Bill and Sue Webster's beautiful home. Those in attendance included: President Jim Griffiths, Mike Orr, Larry Duffy, Bob Blake, Jim Ramsey, Steve and Linda Waterhouse, Mike Bettman, Hank Amon, Bill and Sue Webster, and me. Prior to the meeting, several of us played golf with Mike Orr and Bill Webster skillfully capitalizing on Bill's home course knowledge to give Hank and me a run for our money. Curiously, our play seemed to improve in direct correlation to the number of beers consumed. After the business of the meeting, Bill and Sue treated us to a fabulous dinner at which we all enjoyed catching up with each other and news of classmates.
You will be hearing a lot more about the subjects covered at the meeting but highlights included the news that Bob Blake recently won the Alumni of the Year Award, Hank Amon and his agents again led our class to record-setting results for the Alumni Fund, the Napa Valley minireunion was a tremendous success, next year's spring mini-reunion is tentatively scheduled for Charleston, S.C., in May. News of some exciting new class projects, and the finalizing of mini-reunion plans for Homecoming Weekend (Harvard) should have received the Alumni Magazine issue containing this column prior to the minireunion. If you have been undecided about attending, please come. It really is a lot of fun!
Marc Efron sent along an informative e-mail mentioning that he and Barbara live in Chevy Chase, Md. They have twin 10 year-olds, Charlie and Nick, who Marc says are certain "they will become major league baseball players, but I tell them to keep going to school just in case those plans don't work out." They must be quite good, however, because Marc is hoping that our own Bill Brown of the Detroit Tigers might read this and keep an eye on their progress. We assume that if they do make it to the BIGS Dad would become their agent given his legal experience. Marc is a partner in a large Washington law firm specializing in defending companies that find themselves in difficulty with the government as a result of government contracts.
Marc relayed news that Jerry Putnam and his wife, Jane, are now empty nesters. Their older son Michael, a Dartmouth grad, is married and practicing law in Dallas while their younger son, Jared, is at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. Jerry is a doctor in Washington specializing in pulmonary medicine.
Marc said that Tom Wise is head of the department of psychiatry at Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia. Tom and his wife, Karen, have two daughters, the older of whom is entering her senior year in high school. He said that Tom and Karen are busy coping with the dual challenges of teenagers and college applications I am sure that sounds familiar to many of us. Marc sees Bob McConnaughey, who works in the same building, and also from time to time Rich Bloch, Rick Davey and Don Boardman.
