Your correspondent is just back from Hanover, where the mid-June weather was reminiscent of March and the campus as lovely as ever. Alumni Glee Club Concert is always fun. Plays to a full house of older classes at Spaulding on the Monday after Commencement and sings the good old songs with the authentic lyrics—a touch of yesteryear. Jim Schaefer and Jim McLaughlin did yeoman duty, consummating in the College receiving much more favorable prices for heating oil early this year. The class of '48 continues to contribute in many ways. (Its always great to take a few mintes on the rockers we keep on the Inn porch.)

When this reaches you, Lou Clarke should be among us as he sits out the Atlantic hurricane season at home. Frolic is supposed to be laid up in the Canary Islands. His last leg around the world should bring him from there back to the United States.

Dick Bredenberg represented the class at the Dartmouth Glee Club/Alumni Glee Club concerts in Hanover and at New York's Carnegie Hall in April. They were accompanied by the Hanover Chamber Orchestra in a mostly Brahms concert featuring his Requiem. He says it was a powerful experience and the thrill of singing at Carnegie Hall was eclipsed only by the concert in Hanover, where the acoustics were superior. Class prexy Jim Schaefer and Ellie attended the New York concert and said they did Dartmouth proud. Shortly thereafter, Dick, who claims that he is now fully retired, and Huldah were off to Holland for a visit. They will miss the fall mini by being in Turkey with former students.

In the event that you find yourself near Hanover on the second Tuesday of any month about noon, cross the new bridge to Norwich, Vermont, and take in the Upper Valley 1948 luncheon at the Norwich Inn. The local faithful meet there and talk about the rest of us, girls, politics and other controversial stuff.

Two thoughtful letters came from Mel Cheesman, one of our senior educators. He pointed out that in our college days, "equality equaled equality of opportunity." This has been broadened to an attempt to mandate equality in all ways to all persons even though we are, by definition, different. It is, he points out, a tough nut to crack. He questions the policy that asserts that America needs 100,000 more teachers and 100,00 more police on the streets to keep us free.

Sadly, we report the death of Joe Smiths wife, Helen, on May 29. The services at the First Congregational Church in Hanover Center on June 2 were well attended by Ginny and Bud Gedney, John Hatheway, Ray Richard, Barbara and Bob Munson, Pat McAllister, Margie and Bill Scott, Jean McLaughlin, Joan and Lloyd Krumm, Gil Shattuck, Ellie and Bob Huke and Sam Wilkinson.

It's not too late to plan to be in Hanover October 27-29 for the annual mini-reunion, class meeting and Harvard-Dartmouth football. Gedney and Hatheway have done themselves proud planning good eating and fellowship for all. BE THERE!
