Alast-minute update: The column and feature story dedicated to "special places" on campus has been delayed until this spring. But send me your reminiscences now. There seem always to be cycles of war and peace somewhere on the globe. I imagine that in most cases our classmates are united in their concern, indifference or ignorance of these battles. A few wars will find classmates on opposite sides of a conflict. A case in point: Amin Elwary comes from a family of Palestinian exiles living in Jordan, where he is living again. Recent activities since 1995 include assuming the position of V.P. of industrial operations with Century Investment Group, whose main activities were associated with Israeli strategic partners, "at a time when the peace between Israel and the Palestinians was still in bloom." His job was to contact Israeli industrialists and assess their strengths, and at the same time show them what Palestinian industrialists were capable of doing. He had also hoped to "share peace thinking with these partners, and assess the realities of peace with Israel." When this seemed no longer possible, he resigned from Century at the end of August 1999. He feels that peace in the Middle East will just be a mirage unless there is compliance with the UN resolutions. He writes: "Everyone is praying for the success of the Palestinians to regain their country, their statehood, their freedom and their dignity. I hope more American friends join them in this freedom fight." (Secretary's Note: Amin sent this before the September 11 terrorist attack; he has since written to say that he condemns the attack and believes that those responsible must be punished.) In more conventional news from other parts of the world, I've heard from John Gridley that he is still in South Dakota. His daughter Anne (Bard '02) spent last summer at Oxford University, taking a theater course from the British American Drama Academy at Balliol College.

In the process of updating his e-mail ad- dress, I found out that Gerald Dorros is president of the Arizona Heart Institute Foundation in Phoenix. His medical practice is in Scottsdale, Arizona. Many of our classmates have embraced the Internet revolution, but few to the extent of Phil Schaefer, who has helped to create and continues to maintain his community's Web site: www.eastmannh.com . Now living near Hanover, he wrote, "Last winter was a fantastic winter for skiing, if you could get out of your driveway—our total accumulation was 13 feet. I may get more involved with Dartmouth after all our children have graduated—daughter '99 is in medical school in New Jersey, daughter '97 Tufts completed her first year at Tuck, son '01 Tufts graduated in May!"
