Lots of news to report this month, folks, and I promise not to talk about the NASDAQ any more, so let's get right to it. Bill Huber took some time to check in from WinstonSalem, North Carolina—his home for the past year-and-a-half. Bill's an svp for strategic sourcing at Wachovia Bank. Bill and Lynn have three children (Kelsey, Clare and Ben). Bill wrote, it appears, primarily to address a misconception that he's fallen off the face of the earth, but"the truth is, we have simply discovered that a glass of lemonade under the magnolia tree beats a Metro North commute any day of the week!" Bill also mentioned that he had intersected with Jay Garfinkel (along with wife Sharon and children Anna and Billy) in the Big Apple.

Sometimes it's eerie how the planets seem to move into alignment. I was in a deep, intensive, auto-regressive discussion with Mark Hausmann on the ski slopes out here not long ago. We were talking about the increasingly distant days of freshman year at Russell Sage, and Fran Manning arose as a topic (so did Chris Wise, Ken Weinstein and a bunch of others). Lo and behold, literally days later, news broke that Fran has become a partner at the Philadelphia-based law firm of Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young. Fran works out of the firm's litigation department in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, focusing primarily on employment law and insurance. Congratulations, Fran! Now you can get all those younger associates to hip-hop and make you look good.

Here's an update from Alan Eagle, using Al's trademark Cliff's Notes tactics: Married; two children; two malamutes; mortgaged to the hilt in Palo Alto, California; and "trying to catch the start-up lightning in a bottle" working for a software company called Avinon as a vp of industry marketing. "That means I sell," Al adds helpfully for clarification purposes. Thankfully, Al still manages to find enough time to follow Stanford's men's hoops team (26-1 as of this writing and headed for a top seed in the NCAA West Regional) and hang out at PacBell Park watching the San Francisco Giants play baseball. Al wants to know about other "mystery" people—e.g., Jens Robinson, Mike Peltz and Bruce Andrus—and why these folks are so blatantly neglected in this column. There are two ways of addressing Al's point. The polite approach is to say that nobody has heard from Jens in years, Mike at last check was writing for Institutional Investor and Bruce is still a doctor adding lots of value in the Granite State. The flippant, close-to-deadline-and-I'm- starting-to-panic approach is to flap your arms wildly and say...and say...um, let's not say anything, actually, and maintain peace.

In the world of telecommunications, Dhruv Khanna, a co-founder of a DSL powerhouse company called Covad, has been in the news (Competitive Carrier) recently. Dhruv has served as Covad's vice president, general counsel and secretary for nearly five years. Dhruv secured his J.D. from Stanford and was with Intel, as lead telecommunications lawyer, for several years prior to starting Covad.

Jenny and I are deeply saddened to report news of the passing of Chrisandra Lynn (Simmons) Presley. Chris was a member of the varsity women's cross-country and track teams, at one time holding six school records in her sports. She is survived by her husband, David. A more detailed obituary will follow in a future edition of the DAM.
