The new president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Greater Boston has made a donation to a student loan fund at the college in hopes that "it might establish a precedent for those who follow each year" in the office. Ira L. Berman, president and treasurer of the Berman Leather Co. of Boston, asked that his donation be added to the principal of a student loan fund established in his name by friends last October. Ira, a resident of Newtonville, was elected president of the Boston Club in March for 1971-72. The new president explained that he made the donation both to show "gratitude and appreciation for the honor bestowed upon me by Boston alumni" and in hopes of establishing the precedent helpful to future generations of Dartmouth men.
The nostalgic letters in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE about those happier days when Dartmouth, in the 1930's, had four men on the U. S. Olympic Ski Team prompted a note from Jerome Low '37 of Briarcliff Manor, N. Y., to bring to mind the wonderful job that Jay Evans '49 of the Outing Club is doing with Dartmouth boys today.
As you may know, Jay has been named Coach of the 1971 U. S. Whitewater Team, from whose ranks Dartmouth may well place three to six men on the Olympic Whitewater Team. The Olympics will feature the events for the first time in 1972, and the same preeminence Dartmouth had in the '30's in skiing we may well have again in the 1970's in the fast-growing, popular white water sports.
These avid Whitewater enthusiasts from the Dartmouth undergraduate ranks are housepainting, lumberjacking, lawncutting, and kayak crafting to earn money to get to the pre-Olympic meets, where they have been gaining confidence and winning far more than their share against more experienced Russians, Germans, French, English, etc. Our boys need the competition, and although the Olympic Committee will provide help in 1972, right now they need help in getting to the meets.
Those who want to help the Dartmouth boys think of something else besides the coed problem can send a .voluntary contribution (tax deductible) to the Led-yard Olympic Fund, 201 McNutt Hall, Hanover, N. H. 03755. I will be most helpful in providing the opportunity for some youngster to get the experience which will help him gain a spot on the Olympic team, and will help to preserve the association of Darmouth's name with tall pines, deep snow, and white water. (Thank you, Jerome, for alerting us to this worthy cause.)
Dartmouth was represented by the following '42's at recent academic occasions around the country: Alexander Fanelli of Hanover, at the Sesquicentennial of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, October 21, 1970, Arnulf Ueland Jr. of Manako, Minn., at the inauguration of Frank R. Barth as President of Gustavus Adolphus College at St. Peter, Minn., October 24, 1970. Dr. Richard H. Hemp-stead of Spokane, Wash., at the inauguration of Edward B. Lindaman as President of Whitworth College at Spokane on February 28, 1970.
One of the biggest Big D affairs to be held in New York City, an Alumni Dinner featuring President John Kemeny, new head football coach Jake Crouthamel, and the Dartmouth Glee Club, provided a thoroughly enjoyable evening for over 850 people on March 24.
As the first coed event of this type, it was a great success, and the ladies helped make it an attractive as well as a fun evening. This was particularly true of the '42 contingent represnted by Mary Ellen and Jon Mendes, Jane and Don Meads, Carolmae and Bob Encherman, BertEnglert, Dick Baldwin, Lois and FrankFaruolo, and Phyllys and Milt Williams. Milt, our Newsletter Editor, rates this road show "GP" and 4-stars.
President Dick Lippmann reports that the meeting held in Hanover on Saturday, January 16 was excellent in terms of ideas and plans already in the works for the 30th Reunion in 1972. The Class is grateful to Al Britton and Wally Farr for accepting the important jobs of co-chairmen.
The Class wishes to extend its sincere sympathy to the following: The family of Alfred R. Miller Jr. of Cambridge (Mass.) who died unexpectedly on March 25, 1971 of peritonitis and complications after surgery on a ruptured appendix... To Ernest D. Grinnell, whose wife died in February... and to Joseph H. CohenJr., whose father passed away in Boston in January. (An obituary on Alfred R. Miller Jr. will be carried in this or a subsequent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.)
To close on a pleasant note, F. ScottMatthews, formerly vice president-marketing of the very active STP Corporation of Des Plaines, Ill., has joined GAC Corporation, Allentown, Pa„ in its Florida land development division. Scott must see some great possibilities in land development growing out of the soon-to-be-opened Disneyland in Orlando, Fla.
Please don't fail to help your Class Agents and their leader John Nauss to get their job done expeditiously and effectively by the June 30th deadline for the Alumni Fund Drive.
