As you are scanning this column, '51' glorious 50th reunion is receding into the past. Sorry that I can't tell you more—the deadline bugaboo required that this dispatch be submitted in advance of our nostalgic gathering. But you'll read all about it in the first column by incoming class secretary Peirce McKee, in the September October issue of the magazine.

I was surprised and intrigued to learn that Mo Monahan, after spending virtually all of his life in the Hawaiian Islands and becoming a major personage on the island of Maui, has permanently resettled in Motueka, New Zealand. I zapped him an e-mail to ask how come. The reply, by snail mail: "Why did I move to New Zealand? I moved away from Hawaii because there are too many people there. I moved to New Zealand because it is a gorgeous land, in a temperate climate, that has yet to be discovered." Mo hasnt gotten the Sandwich Islands entirely out of his blood, however. He signed off: "Best regards and aloha."

Orlando Hobbs has also migrated from his native surroundings to a far different clime. After spending virtually all of his life here in the Washington, D.C., area, he and Ethel moved last summer to Winter Garden, Florida. When I called to check the new address, I was saddened to hear that he had suffered a stroke, but encouraged when he said stoutly that he is "recovering" and "very disappointed that I can't make it to the reunion in Hanover." Hang in there, Landy!

Got a note the other day from Jeff O'Connell, who continues to issue enlightening commentary on a wide range of subjects from his law faculty lair at the University of Virginia: "My brother Tom '50 and I have written a piece for the forth coming issue of the Journal of Law and Politics, reviewing former Duke Law Dean Carringtons book Stewards of Democracy. He castigates the Supreme Court for arrogating so much power unto itself. We make the point that it was bad enough to have the presidents selection of justices a prime issue in the campaign, but that was before the justices took it upon themselves to select the president!"

Our class Webmaster Al Brout has done a great job establishing a class homepage on the college Web site and setting up a '51 slot on the "Classtalk" bulletin board there. Check it out at www.alum.dartmouth.org. And, hard on the heels of our landmark reunion, we hear tidings of golden wedding celebrations for couples who married soon after our graduation. If such a fete is held for you, let us hear about it, and be sure to mention who attended (such as those who were your ushers those 50 years ago). Send the word to Peirce McKee, 25 Charles Hill Circle, Orinda, CA 94563; pmckee@sutro. com. And now, so long, and my best to you all. It's been great doing this column.
