This issue of DAM will reach your mailbox about a week before the San Diego mini-reunion. News of that bash will wait for a later issue. To those of you going: Have a ball! And, how about squirting me an e-mail after ward?
In February some 30 of us got together for the regular winter mini. Saturday morning, for a few minutes at least, 16 of us were "all business" at the meeting of the class executive committee. Here's a summary of the proceedings.
The '50 minutes: The meeting was called to order by president Bob Mcllwain. A moment of silence was observed for classmates whose deaths have been reported since the fall meeting: Eddie Poole and Chipper Chapman. The minutes of the September 29 meeting were read and accepted.
Bob McIlwain led a discussion on his proposal for an outreach program to identify and try to assist classmates, wives and widows who are experiencing emotional, social or physical problems. A resolution was voted to establish such a program and Rosemary Lindenthal was named as its chairman. (More on the outreach program later.)
Walt Lindenthal and Bill Carpenter displayed the plaque which will be mounted in the lobby of the Alumni Gym with the names of each year's athlete named by the coaches to receive the Class of 1950 Community Service Award. Funds for this program had been previously voted from the small surplus of the 50th reunion budget.
Treasurer Fizz Nichols reported that the treasury included $16,930 in dues income, $1,900 in Dickey Foundation funds and $223 for the Athletic Fund.
Voted: $500 to continue the athletic scholarship fund. Joe Medlicott discussed several responses to the newsletter request to classmates who wish to receive class or College mailings no longer.
Bob Mcllwain read a letter from head agent Rick Miller indicating $221,000 received in the Alumni Fund, exceeding the class goal of $1800,000. The goal for this year is $200,000.
Len Matless reported on the weekend's minireunion activities. Next fall's mini will be the weekend of October 11-13.Tom Ruggles reported about 50 classmates and wives intend to attend the April mini-reunion in San Diego.
Bob Mcllwain indicated that the class's 55 th reunion will be on June 13-15,2005. A reunion chairman has yet to be found. Jacques Harlow, class Webmaster, reported that the 1950 Web page is up and running. It can be readily found at www.alum.dartmouth.org/classes/50.
Newc Eldredge reported on the 1950 tree program, which has now been officially transferred to the class of 2000. A tree was recently dedicated to the Zantops, the two professors who were brutally murdered a year ago, and several of our classmates attended the ceremony. Eldredge also outlined the rather simple procedure for dedicating a tree.
A memo from Dave Hitchcock was read, indicating that Dr. Josef Joffe, a German journalist, had been selected as the first John Sloan Dickey Class of 1950 Foreign Affairs Fellow.
That's it, for now.
