Alan Macdonald, executive director of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, has been named a director of the Massachusetts Business Development Corp. The Roundtable is comprised of CEOs from major businesses who provide long-term strategies on state economic and social issues.

Alan previously worked for GE and Gulf Oil in public affairs posts, was a state assistant attorney general for six years and a chairman of the Winchester, Massachusetts, board of selectmen for two separate terms. Most significantly, he is a past president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Eastern Massachusetts. Even more significantly, he and Jane have two sons.

Dr. Stephen Tosi has been appointed chief medical officer of UMass Memorial Healthcare. He is now directly responsible for the medical staff. Board certified in urology and pediatric urology, Steve also serves as an assistant professor of surgery at the UMass Medical School.

Across the country, John Erkkila is an orthopedic surgeon with the Corvallis (Oregon) Clinic. John and Ellie, a Red Cross committee volunteer, have three children: Kari, 29, an industrial designer in Seattle; Kebi, 26, a teacher and ski instructor; and Kyle, 23, at University of Montana, currently described by his dad as an "adventurer".

The fascinating story of Osmonics, the $200 million Minnetonka, Minnesota, fluid purification and filtration products business Dean Spatz started with his wife, Carol, in 1971, was chronicled in a recent issue of Minnesota Business. Dean actually formulated plans to start a company using reverse osmosis to purify water while at the Thayer School. Through innovation, product line expansion, a public offering and acquisitions, Dean now has Osmonics competing in both business and consumer sectors. He has set his sights on $1 billion in sales in 10 years. Stay tuned.

Charles Faerber, vice president of notary affairs, has been at the National Notary Association for 24 years and is considered the country's leading notary authority. The association considers notaries trusted third parties—the bedrock of commerce and law. More than 175,000 notaries are members of Charlies association.
