Many "of our classmates earned law degrees after graduation and have parlayed them into noteworthy careers. One such high-profile lawyer is our own vice president, Ed Williams, who specializes in litigation on behalf of athletes such as Angel Perez, who defected from Cuba in 1993. Perez's participation on the U.S. kayak team in Sydney in 2000 was contested by Cuba. Ed successfully argued the case before the U.S. Olympic Committee and ultimately the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Mr. Perez was able to compete for his adopted country.

The local newspaper in Canton, Ohio, announced that incumbent Charles E. Brown Jr. was running in the primary for Republican candidate for Stark County Common Pleas Court. Chuck was appointed to the post last year by Gov.Taft. After his law degree from Case Western, Chuck was a military prosecutor in the Marine Corps, then had a successful civil practice with numerous corporate clients. The article notes that county voters traditionally support incumbent judges, so I expect that Chuck will continue to don his black robes.

Business NHMagazine has profiled John Peltonen for his work in environmental law. John was involved in the 1983 groundbreaking law case, EPA vs. Ottati and Goss. He's currently working with the City of Dover to help close its landfill. With innovative technologies, the city may be able to save millions from a potential Superfund cost of up to $32 million.

John Topping writes that he has been in Hanover twice since the King Awards Dinner. The first time was to discuss a possible intern program seeking to place 10 to 12 undergraduates and recent graduates in internships and fellowships in the environment and energy fields, both in the D.C. area and abroad. He started this in a small way over the summer and hopes to have it going full steam by fall. "We are working closely with the Tucker Foundation, Dickey and Rockefeller Centers and hope to have something which will involve a number of '64s." His second visit was for the 50 th anniversary of the Tucker Foundation. Also at the Tucker dinner were trustee Stan Roman and Dave Shipler. Dave is one of the experts interviewed on TV about Middle East issues.John writes that Dave is enjoying his work as a freelance writer and film consultant.

In non-lawyerly news, Frank Herringer was recently elected to the 15-member board of directors of AT&T. Frankhas been with Transamerica for the past 21 years, serving as president and CEO. He is also on the board of directors of AEGONNV, which acquired Transamerica in 1999, as well as the Charles Schwab and Unocal corporations.

In May The Rocky Mountain News announced that the son of Michael Bender, Jeremy, won one of the nations most prestigious university entrepreneurship award for his MIT project on forming a company that will synthesize carbohydrates in days rather than the current months or years. Mike has been a justice in the Colorado Supreme Court since 1997.
