A note from Bud Miskell last fall commented about this small world and running into classmates in unexpected places. Attending a Dartmouth club luncheon on Cape Code to hear a tennis pro Bud ran into Jean and Bob Grant, next at a Falmouth Academy shindig he encountered Howie Thomas, whose grandson is in Buds granddaughters class.
Perusing last falls issue of DMS, Frank West's column carried the news that Hugh Lena had celebrated his Both (six months late when weather was nicer) by parachuting last October: "I jumped tandem from 13,500 feet, free fell 9,000 feet, opened the chute at 4,500 feet and had a nice soft landing at the Lincoln airport. I could see Providence, the Rhode Island coast and even the towers of Boston." The same DMS issue also carried a detailed article titled "Waldo Fielding '43: Delivering lines instead of babies." Doc, in addition to an active stage schedule, is teaching the art at Brandeis University. Kudos to two active octogenarians!
Moving to the North Country—a not-so-happy tale to report: Bob Field took an unscheduled swan dive into his basement this past fall, broke collar bone, cracked ribs and waited some time in agony before being found. The final blow was a case of the shingles, which he is toughing out while working on our 60th. A note from Alumni Records Office noted that Mort Pechters granddaughter, Patricia, the drum majorette of the Harvard Band, performed at last fall's H-D game. The odds are catching up with us as the death toll begins to mount. This month add: Bill Milmore, Jim Evans, Clarke Lyon, Bob Straub, Leon Thomas Ellis and Thomas Redstone. Our condolences to their families. Because obituary information from College records is so slow in forthcoming I ask you to please forward to me (address below) any newspaper obits you encounter concerning '43s! In that connection I am indebted to Don McCorkindale for rapid imput regarding Clarke Lyon.Stay well—see you in June!
