More good stuff that our classmates are doing in the non-profit sector.Ten years ago Mark and Paula Speers started a consulting firm, Health Advances, focused on the commercialization of new medical technologies. From the start, and now for 40 consecutive quarters, they have closed their office for a day each quarter and contributed the entire staffs time and talents to a non-profit organization. They have repaired nursing homes, painted schools, prepared meals, entertained the elderly and read to inner city children. Mark and Paula find that they have done good for their community, fostered camaraderie within their staff and introduced their staff to organizations where some have continued to contribute their free time. Health Advances is now nearly 40 full-time consultants, able to accomplish a great deal of good in a single day. Recently they prepared over 1,000 meals for AIDS patients and sorted hundreds of cases of groceries for food pantries. The Speers wonder what great things could be accomplished if more businesses volunteered their time just once per quarter.
