I heard that the definition of insanity is doing what you've always done and expecting different results. I'd like to modify that statement to reflect my current situation: "Insanity is having three children in four years and expecting to sleep and have time to myself sometime this century!" Daniel Alexander Nadel, class of 2017, joined our family on December 30,1999, just in time to watch the ball drop in Times Square. Along with his sisters Leah Jessica, '13 and Samantha Rae '14, Daniel is keeping us on our proverbial toes. It is a good thing that he is the most handsome baby ever, or I might be frustrated at how difficult it is to get anything done, including this column. However, some generous alums bailed me out again with good gossip...l mean news. So without further ado, let's get to it.
Ken Kaliski and his wife, Karen, have welcomed Leah Adele, weighing in at 5 pounds, 12ounces, to their family. Thanks to Ken for his first contribution to DAM, and my compliments on their daughter's name.
Claudia (Broeker) Egger is still on the mommy track, which we all know is the hardest career around (of course I'm not objective on this topic). In El Paso she keeps busy taking care of Dominique (6, in first grade, plays chess?!) and Cassandra (4, in preschool, full of energy) and working as the secretary ("a.k.a. jane-of-all-trades") at her church and doing medical transcriptions. Her husband is finishing up his master's in accounting and working full-time, but Claudia still finds time to decorate her home, "now that the kids aren't tearing everything up as much anymore." Claudia has kept in touch with fellow classmates Beth Parish, Domenic Gaeta, Mary BethClark and Jim Laughlin. She reports that Cheryl Chow married two years ago and lives in Denver. Cheryl, please send an update for inquiring minds.
After IS years, Aloke Mandal, M.D., Ph.D., is leaving the Baltimore-Washington area for Minnesota. Aloke will direct the pancreas transplant program and start up a liver and pancreatic surgery center at Hennepin County Medical Center. He also will have a laboratory to continue his research on liver regeneration with a faculty appointment at the University of Minnesota. Aloke reports that his wife, Fabienne (Williams '79) is a university writing teacher, and that he is anxious to teach his children Paul (4) and Juliette (2) to ice skate and play hockey in their new home environment. Good luck to all, and try to stay warm!
James Doughman is busy planning his upcoming marriage to Hee Jung Ko '92 and fellow Tabard member (wedding planned for late October or early November in New York). James certainly does things with style—after he proposed (and she accepted), they both spent two weeks in Italy with her family to celebrate. At the 1999 Green Key Weekend, James was elected the new president of die Sigma Chi/Tabard Corp., with past president Nancy Byrne in attendance. As if that wasn't enough to keep him busy, James also is job switching, from the pharmaceutical industry to telecommunications and the Internet as head of the New York office of Technology Marketing Consultants Inc.
Finally, as James so aptly pointed out in his e-mail, special kudos to Sue Finegan and her work on the student life initiative recommendations committee. Obviously she and her colleagues did a great deal of work to produce the final report, and we are lucky to have a classmate represent us in that effort.
Take care and be good.
