Having next to no news about any particular classmates, I thought I would use the first column of 2003, the year of our not-quite-20th reunion to do some summating and speculating. In these columns we usually find news of weddings, babies and jobs—the everyday yet extraordinary events that punctuate our lives. Taking our class as a group at this pseudo-milestone, it is amazing to think about our collective experiences.
For example, those of us who procreated shortly after graduation have children about to enter college themselves, and it is quite possible that some have a child already in college! Others are experiencing the joys and terrors of living with teenagers, while many are still changing diapers and reading Good Night Moon or Winniethe Pooh on a regular basis. We have adopted children and lost children, decided not to have children and had many children, and some are still waiting to meet the right person with whom to have children.
In terms of relationships, the story would be quite similar and yet each story would be different. (A platitude I know, but no less true for being one!) Think of the statistics we could gather for/at reunion: the longest relationship, the most marriages, the number of'84s still single, etc. Or perhaps we'd prefer to focus on all the ways we have met our various partners and mates—at school, at work, on line, through friends, in a bar, on a cruise, while skiing or rock climbing or gallery-hopping, Or....
As for our employment, we have worked from the White House to the Black Sea, in the vast blue sky and marine depths, off the land and in skyscrapers, from home and for multinationals. We are, and have been, over-paid, well paid, under-paid and not paid for using our muscles, brains, souls and bodies.
I could go on, but you get the idea. So instead, please come and share some of your specific stories with us at our not-quite-20th reunion. Dates are June 13-15,2003, in Hanover. (Duh!) If you haven't done so yet, do please send the green postcard about reunion back to Molly Wender (or send an e-mail) so we can plan more efficiently and effectively. As we have said previously (but it bears repeating), volunteers to help with reunion or nominations for class officers for the next five years are most welcome! Lastly: SEND NEWS!
