Happy 2,002 to all of you! May the new year bring you much health, wealth and happiness. I have taken the lazy way out writing this column, and have left the news as it came to me. Marianne McCarroll, as usual, sounds really happy. She relinquished her single status and got married on October 13 to Dave Powell in Santa Cruz, California. Marianne writes, "It was a spur of the moment thing (prior to September 11 we had planned to do it with my family in New Jersey) that we fit into a camping weekend with Daves family on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The best part was the amazing fireworks display set off from a pier just below the bluff! And also the fact that there was no stress of planning at all. The next day we jumped waves in an 8-foot swell along with a small colony of seals and sea lions. Dave hopes that this new development will not strip me of my 'free spirit' title!"
I received this e-mail from Boot Seem: "My wife, Lauren' 83, and I lived in Princeton, New jersey, since graduation. We have two girls: Mary, 13, and Nancy, 10, along with a border collie named Jack and a new kitten named (what else) Josie. We had a great home right in town across the street from Albert Einstein's house, but getting tired of high taxes, traffic, long commutes, etc., we made a big lifestyle change. Despite many friends and being firmly rooted in Princeton, we sold our house and moved to Manchester, Vermont, in August. Lauren can continue her work at Princeton University as director of the Princeton Dante Project via telecommuting and occasional in-person meetings. I started my own advertising agency, Vox Communications. I already have done work for Robitussin, the U.S. Army, Hershey and a New England radio station group of 30 stations (owned by Jeff Shapiro and Bruce Danziger—both '83s...but I can always use new clients). With the intention of downsizing, we went the other direction and bought a rambling Victorian farmhouse with three out buildings and 23 acres in Manchester Center. With Bromley season ski passes in hand and a giant snow blower in the garage, we are ready to tackle our first Vermont winter. Jack, the dog, loves it up here because his leash has been retired since we moved. The girls have adjusted well, too, and have many new friends."
Boot writes about fellow '84s: "Dave Chao lives in Scarsdale, New York, and is a partner at TM Capital. He is married to Marianne and has three children, DJ, Annekka and Gehrig. Randy Stiles still lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts (according to where I send the annual Christmas card...the best way to stay in touch between reunions). He is married and has two children, Wes and Ashley. Last word from Mike Caffrey was that he was living outside Pittsburgh, but I think that may have changed since I last spoke with him."
A last-minute e-mail from Ted Cooperstein: "The U.S. Army has called me to active duty. For the coming year I will serve full time as an intelligence officer supporting Special Forces at Special Operations Command Central. I will keep this e-mail address [tmc@coopersteinlaw.com] open for personal messages and I encourage everyone to stay in touch and contact me from time to time. I am sure I will be glad to hear from you."
Keep in touch with Kathy Krause or me, too. We appreciate any news you can send our way.
