The winter addition of Tuck Today puts the spotlight on Bill Seidman. Titled "From Grand Rapids Boy to Washington Operator," the article summarizes a busy career of a multi-talented classmate who 40 years ago worried that the accounting industry was getting into sideline businesses that would eventually cost it its independence. Bill continues his work with CNBC and as a consultant. It is an upbeat article about an octogenarian who still has enthusiasm for whatever he is doing.
Anote from Dave Heald '42, who had shared DOC activities and interests with Bob Straub, who died recently after a battle with Alzheimer's, commented on his many accomplishments. Straub, as Oregon governor among other things, brought high-tech industry to the state, cleaned up the Willamette River and introduced stock investing to state pension plans. Charlie Cusack, an Oregonian, forwarded much newspaper commentary on Straub also.
I'm indebted to Ed Bock for information on Guy Mallett's death, as College records were late and incomplete. He and his wife, George Ann, had visited Jo Mallett, Guys widow, in Paris last April. The Bocks also visited Susie and Frank Sherwood last summer. Frank showed him a copy of his earticle, "I Played Baseball with Ted Williams." They were at competing junior highs in San Diego!
I hope this column doesn't seem too preoccupied with death, but the rate of our demise is rapidly on the rise and while certainly that is no surprise, I find most of my secretarial duties are now devoted to writing obituaries. In that regard I appeal once again foryourhelp—please send me obituary notices when you see them, as College records are often very sketchy or even not at all! The roll of deaths since the last column include: Guy Mallett, Frank Lallande, Frederic Goldman, John Kimball, Richard Pierce, Robert Dana Brown and Eugene McCarthy. Our condolences to their families.
Hang in there, stay well and will see you in June. The dates of the 60th are June 9,10 and 11.
