JAMES KAISER'S Destination Press relies on Big Green guides.
After graduation Kaiser headed home to Bangor, Maine, eager to explore nearby Acadia National Park. Unable to find a comprehensive guidebook to the park where he'd spent his childhood summers, Kaiser dedicated the next year to researching and writing the bestselling Acadia Revealed:The Complete Guide. After a move to the West Coast and publication of another popular guidebook—this time on the Joshua Tree National Park in eastern California—Kaiser created Destination Press to publish guides to the history, geology, ecology, special sites and hiking of national parks. "It's the perfect mix of young entrepreneurialism, a love of the outdoors and a devotion to Dartmouth," he says. Kaiser tapped fellow alums Peter Bohler '03 and Peter Brewitt '03 to spend their post-graduation summer hiking, writing and photographing the hiking section of The GrandCanyon: A Complete Guide. Going green is paying off for Kaiser: This summer he hired Joe Hanion '05 and Kelly Swartz '05 to update the Acadia guide and brought back Brewitt and Bohler to research Yosemite. "We're a success story, but we're definitely still the underdog," says Kaiser. Check out his guides at www.destinationpress.com.
