Steve Winship standing in for Dick Jachens: Snowy and cold—not it seemed, cold enough. But we saw scores upon scores of skaters—parents balancing small children, school girls cutting a figure or skimming along with boys, older gents equally enjoying their skating proclivities. Lights over the town pond afforded evening fun. An occasional snowflake drifted down. It was a classic New Hampshire scene, and precious to us.
Our mailbag and phone have linked us with numerous classmates. Here's Bruce Brown in Seattle, intending to attend the March 16-17 Florida mini-reunion: "All is well here, save for a few (predictable) aches and pains."
From John and Pat Twist in Memphis: "Glad you're back playing hit-and-giggle tennis—I'm back playing hit-and-wince...half repaired after a rotator cuff. Our travel is slowing down, can't find a new place of prime interest."
Talked with Dr. Jack Selby in Lubbock, west Texas, where Fie and Carolyn have lived for many years. He trained in part at Dartmouth Medical, became a specialized surgeon, taught at Texas Tech Medical School, which he helped found. "I've been doing some consulting, reviewing cases and the like—really enjoyed my career." And they have 15 great-grandchildren as well as daughters in New England. A hearty message and card from Pete and Joyce Keir in Alexandria, Virginia. Its evident he's active in tennis. Joyce is feeling much better, and they hope to be at the Florida mini.
In nearby Peterborough, New Hampshire, George and Millie Thompson advised they now have no hay for sale (he did, I reported, in 2002). He needs a hay rake, and "bought a new tractor— good machine—though after riding it a couple of days, the enjoyment tends to become somewhat repetitive.'
While moving in December to a Sarasota, Flordia, retirement community (new tel. 941-378- 3172), class secretary Dick Jachens was struck by severe sciatica. For years he has operated wonderfully in helping keep us together, keeping this space interesting. I'm subbing while Dick recovers. He and Ginny join me in sending best to all.
