As someone in attendance at our Thanksgiving gathering made the bold pronouncement that the Farmer's Almanac predicted that December would bring the heaviest snowfall of the 2003-04 winter season, we chuckled. "Impossible," we all echoed as we were sitting around on November 27 in a balmy 50 degrees in Connecticut. Two massive snowstorms later (one less than a week to the day of the snowy "prediction"), I'm beginning to think that it might be time to pay attention to that tried and true weather prognosticator. Who knows how much snow may have fallen by the time you are all reading this but perhaps we can all convene for a run down Tuckerman's in June!
All I know is that the December 5 snow- storm—as pretty as it was—foiled the New York City weekend rendezvous plans of Alison Cooper Phillips, Allison Shutz Moskow, Jennifer Archibald Williams, Valerie Hartman Levy and yours truly. Rather than basking in a rare child-free, girls' weekend gathered together at the Righa Royal, strolling the city streets, relaxing over cappuccinos and soaking up various forms of culture of our choice—we were each at our respective homes, snowbound like everyone else, sledding in the backyard and playing lots of board games (or is that "bored" game—who knew by Saturday night?). The good news: It was a nice excuse to stay put. The bad news: My N.Y.C. girls' weekend was going to make this one of the easiest columns to pen, and I am now staring into the abyss of a blank computer screen. Thankfully, I have been saved by some of you with the following news on our classmates:
The Connecticut Post reported that Dr. David L. Katz, associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine and director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, has been recognized for professional excellence in internal medicine and preventive medicine. Other top honors bestowed upon our revered classmate include being elected as a fellow of the American College of Physicians along with his election to fellowship in the American College of Preventive Medicine in 2001. The Consumers Research Council of America has also recognized David as one of Americas Top Physicians in preventive medicine for 2003. Our hats off to you, Dr. Katz.
Susannah Gaylord Budington is living in Washington, D.C., working as SVP of Spectrum Science Public Relations, a firm specializing exclusively in health care products, issues and missions. While Susannah only wrote with news of another classmate (below), we can share that in addition to training for marathons, her 13 years in the PR field have brought us such notables as the hugely successful, sward-wmning Milk Mustache campaign that Susannah oversaw as communications director for the International Dairy Foods Association. I am sure we all have a favorite spokesperson from that campaign—well done, Susannah.
Dr. Lynn Brady is a doctor at Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Lynn was one of 26 riders chosen from more than 1,000 applicants to join cancer survivor Lance Armstrong for the 3,200 mile Tour of Hope cycling ride last October to raise awareness of cancer research. You can read more about the Tour of Hope by visiting www.tourofhope.org make a "cancer promise" in honor of our classmate and see a great national team photo with Lynn (standing fourth from left) and her teammates in what must have been an incredibly rewarding experience. Quite a tour deforce, Lynn.
May the joy and wonder of the holiday season remain with you throughout the New Year. All the best to all of you—and send us news!
