A promising career was cut short and a good friend lost when, on Feb. 23, Bob Rentmer succumbed to acute leukemia at the New York Memorial Hospital. The dramatic fight which Bob waged against the dread disease was heralded by newspapers and medical journals throughout the country. We can all feel proud to have known as fine a fellow as Bob. There is a more detailed report in the In Memoriam section of this issue.
During our recent cold snap, I couldn't help but recall the marrow-freezing winter of '42 when 12 of us had the misfortune to share a garret bedroom with a conscientious hockey goalie. Craving fresh air with the intensity of a MacFadden disciple, the young athlete would climb in the basket at the prescribed 10 PM, after dutifully unleashing into the boudoir all the pent-up fury of the north wind. Then when Slim Conner closed up the Paddock, we'd have to play Operation Muskox getting to the trundle .... while Mr. Allen Barret blissfully wheezed away. And sure enough, think of the devil and there's a letter in the box the next day. Al asked me to thank all the baseball stars who chipped in so graciously for the Jeff Tesreau Memorial—to wit: "Buzz" Beattie, "Lefty" Bowman,Fred Campbell, Dale Brougher, Walter Burke,Bob Callan, Don Comes, Ted Monro, DickRondeau, Jack Riley, Charlie Schumacher and others I might have missed.
Al, reporting for the Baltimore Sun, contains the Dartmouth stronghold in Baltimo', screening prospects, handling club affairs, etc. Al and Pat have a little son Mackie, who will make us forget the Fitkins and Claytons in about 18 annums.
Speaking of Al makes me think of his recent visitor, Dale Sisson, who makes me think of "Needle" Allen. A prospective Sherman Billingsly, the Needle has organized a series of Top Hat White Tie and Tails BYOB soirees in Englewood. The last dance was held Feb. 11 and was a smasher, I mean top drawer, it was rum. Really was a wonderful evening Dale and Norma Sisson, Pinkyand Ro Corroon and Bull and Barbie Hinman were among guests. The "Pink" has been enjoying a rather successful season on the lecture platform.
Bob Colwell came through with a nice social note clipped from the pages of the Tribune."Swampy" Marsh announced his engagement to pretty Blanche Moore of Larchmont Feb. 24. Blanche is a former Colby girl. The Swamp was recently transferred to Boston for NAM. Bob further tells of the CharlieMartus' getting together with Max Edwards at Marty Shae's apartment just before Max took off for Europe. Max is a legal eagle now. Also .... cousin Ted Colwell, Chase National banker, has extended his sphere of influence He is now a Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in New Rochelle (that should jell well with the Phi Gams) and has been named treasurer of a local tombstone concern. I do not recall whether we reported that Mr and Mrs. Ted are Parents of a 2½-year-old glamour girl, Linda. And still more news from Bob:
Ronnie and Joanne King have moved from NYC to more suburban Montclair. Momma and babv doing fine while Pop King makes a fortune with sugar brokers Lowry & Co. Shortly after George Cusack was married, his father called and eave me George's address in Union, N. J. But by the time I had written to George, he had departed for Mexico to join the staff of the Mexican branch of CO2 Chemical Fire Extinguishing Co. Dave and Pat Scotford are in Baltimore where "Scottie" is completing his studies at Johns Hopkins.
"And I'm glad to report that the old scholar, jovial "Moose" Musser, has joined the ranks of wage slaves in a large Life Insurance Agency in Manchester, N. H. As I understand it, the agency is run by a Dartmouth man who is one of the top flight life salesmen in the U. S. and was written up in Fortune last Spring. Moose is designing pension plans for the agency and it sounds like a good deal.
Look for some political rumblings from the Peach State. While waiting to get started on a graduate degree next fall, lawyer CharlieMottola has taken a position teaching at the U. of Ga. law school. He is very sincere in his work, and with the young legal minds to play around with, I shouldn't be surprised if we've fostered another Scaramouche. Ginny and Susan are both well.
Bill Barrett was down to NY for the lumberman's convention recently, and ran into Jack Sterling, Dave Wilson, Rick Lewis,Whizzer White and Gus Clucas at the Dartmouth Club.... and picked up the check. Phil Penberthy is now working in New York with Geyer, Newell and Ganger.
I just heard that Boston Bob Mclaughry is a husband! How about that! I have no more details. Bill Orr and pretty Pricilla Mary LePage of Longmeadow, Mass., were married Jan. 27. Carl Eldridge was best man and Phil H. Brown was among the ushers. After honeymooning in Florida the couple returned to Longmeadow, where Bill is president of Sterling Orr, Inc. (I think he holds the honor of being the first corporation president in the class.) Joe Dammamon and Barbara Block of New York announced their intentions for a summer wedding Jan 28. Barbara is doing TV work for CBS. Joe is with American Safety Razor Company.
I got a swell letter from Jamie Witzel (Mrs.Fritz) and a photo of young F. Phace Witzel who greeted the world last 4th of July to the tuneful Wah-hoo-wah of attending Dr. Sanderson '23. Gosh, he's a good-looking little fella. Unfortunately, MAGAZINE policy does not permit pictures of the youngsters unless accompanied by Poppa. We'll have to get Fritzer and Jamie in the next one.
Wilbur and Dottie Johnson are proud parents of a little lady, Terry Sylvia, who was born last August 8. Dottie promises that we'll get the information more promptly "on the next occasion."
