Not a lot of news this month, but what we have is from classmates from whom we haven't heard recently. Ah, fresh air.
Tom Tiemann—professor of economics at Elon College, former dean of its Love School of Business and my Tabard frat bro—received Elon's Excellence in Teaching Award last spring. A colleague noted that Tom "has been a quiet presence [that's a change from 35 years ago], innovative and engaged in offering students the very best...and the vision to move beyond the classroom." One of his students added, "He is student-centered and cares about doing his job right." Pretty heady stuff, Tom. Congrats.
From the Land of Enchantment comes word that Bill Darter is still alive and well, though ap- parently not looking to spend much longer there. Bill's with the government (no further details available and I'm certainly not asking) while his wife, Vera, teaches ESL. Daughters Michelle (fin- ishing grad school) and Christina (an architect) and their spouses joined them for a wonderful vacation in Cancun last summer. And Bill and Vera are just back from Costa Rica, where they attended to some real estate that they plan to make "the Dobles/Darter Old Folks Home."
Proof that someone actually reads this col- umn comes from John Wolf, who wrote ac- knowledging the squib in the Jan/Feb issue concerning his diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. John observed how "hard [it] is for two peo- ples who live so close and share so much histo- ry (some good, a lot bad) to make the leap of faith and match it with the actions that are necessary to move ahead." He also expressed how heartening, if not a little surprising, it is to know "how many classmates, friends and many others feel a real sense of engagement in our efforts. Thank you." No John, I think its we who thank you.
Terry Shumaker writes that he and Polly still live in Bow, New Hampshire, in the house they bought just six years after graduation and their wedding. Their three grown sons " have pursued markedly different careers from each other and their dad." Terry reports occasional sightings of Greg Hemberger, Dave Ruedig and Geoff Scott, and hearing from Torn Coffman and Geoff Dyer. Hey guys, how about a line to Scott or me with news, views, whatever?
Finally, speaking of co-secretary Scott Holland, he'll have returned from Thailand by the time this issue arrives in mailboxes and he'll take up the pen for the next few issues. Let's give him something to work with. Thoughts and suggestions on our 35 th reunion would not be premature at this point, although there is the risk that your executive committee would faint dead away. So we'll chance it.
