Last fall the Hanover and Dartmouth Communities were surprised and sorry to learn that Campion's store, a landmark on Main Street since 1906, was to be sold. It seems that our classmate, Ron Campion, was ready to retire after having been with the store for 30 years and its president since 1983. This past month Ron has announced that he has decided not to proceed with the sale, but to recommit himself to Campion's with the attitude of a new owner and start

things afresh. Three new associates have been hired from outside the store and physical changes are underway in both Hanover and the New London branch. Ron assures us that alumni will still feel comfortable in Campion's. Ron returned to Hanover in 1960, after a stint in the Army CIC looking for communists in Salt Lake City and several years with R.H. Stearns in Boston. He and his wife, Connie, have two grown sons: Brian, Franklin Pierce '88, who is working in the store, and Eric, St. Lawrence '89, who is working at the Woodstock Inn. Ron is active in tennis and fishing and manages to get in plenty of activity with his summer home on Lake Sunapee, and his condo in Vero Beach, Fla. He reports seeing Tom Byrne and Jere Daniel on Main Street from time to time.

Richard (Rick) McNally, president of McNally Construction Company, Inc., in Somerset, Mass., has been presented a community service award at the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce annual recognition banquet. Rick has been very active in community affairs, having served as director and chairman of the board for the Chamber as well as spearheading a number of special projects. After a stint in the coast guard, he joined his father's firm in 1961, where he has been active in industry and labor relations affairs. He has also served on the board of directors of the YMCA, Slade's Ferry Trust, and as a member of the Greater Fall River Development Council.

I recently had a long overdue chat with my Wheeler Hall roommate, Walt Van Dorn. Walt is president of Powers and Hall P.C., a Boston law firm where he specializes in tax work. With a partner he authored a book on Massachusetts taxation several years ago. He certainly has the right location for his specialty. After college Walt served in the army, then attended Harvard Law School. He has practiced in Boston ever since and has been with his present firm since 1977. Walt and his wife, Betsey, have two boys, 12 and 14, who are good athletes according to their father. He also has two older sons from a previous marriage, Walter Jr., a lawyer with the FCC in Washington, and Gerald, a junior at George Washington University who is headed for medicine. Walt's interests include music, cooking, and traveling to such places as southern Tuscany. He sees a number of Boston classmates including Woody Goss, Brooks Parker, Mike Gorton, Ralph Sauter, and Bob Fanger.

Speaking of Brooks, congratulations to him and his team for making the class objective of over $100,000 for the Alumni Fund in what has to be one of the toughest years ever.
