Further memories of Karl Bruch: 'An entiy dated November 15,1936, in my desperately meticulous financial records shows a 50-cent charge for the rental of crutches. During that freshman year I studied every spare minute. At matriculation Dr. Ernest Martin Hopkins told us to look at the guy to our right and to our left, and be aware that one of us would not still be around at graduation. But I also knew I needed some exercise—maybe a little jogging each day, and tagging along behind the cross-country runners would show me where running was safe. Then one day, in a nasty little gully, I stepped into a hole and sprained my ankle. I limped slowly back to the gym for my clothes, and the next morning had to go to Dick's House for repairs, consisting of a cast and the above set of crutches. The runners, who never knew I was way back there, included (to my memory) Roy Merchant, Jim Malaney, Dave Dance, Bob Foss and "Chief" Wonson, later chosen to set the pace for the last few laps of Glenn Cunninghams successful assault on the worlds indoor mile on a board track."
Just called to our attention is the regrettable loss of three classmates: Chalmers J. Carothers, October 26, 2003; Louis C. Chesley, October 21, 2004; and Archie Lee Blades, November 18,2004.
