The class of 1944 has a new president, who will serve until October 2009. In the important period between the 60th reunion and the 65th the class will have had two presidents, Harry Morse, who had to resign because of health issues, and now Bill McElnea. We thought a short article about each of these two men would be appropriate at this time.
Your leader for the past year, Harry spent the waryears and beyond in the Navy, part of the time in medical school. After discharge from the mili- tary he went into private practice only to return to another branch, the Army Air Corp. He still found time to serve on several otolaryngology boards and the Syvertsen committee at Dartmouth Med- ical School. As class president he initiated a plan asking members to provide their own obituar- ies. He ran a very successful fall mini-reunion and began some planning for the 65 th, coming to the conclusion that a« numbers dwindle, combining banquets with other classes (as we did at this year's mini) made sense.
Our new president Bill McElena served four and a half years as a pilot in WWII, returned to Hanover, graduated from Dartmouth and Tuck. He had two rewarding careers—on Wall Street and with Caesars World.
He always kept connected to the class as treasurer, on the reunion committee and as an agent for the Dartmouth Alumni Fund.
We think that his speech of acceptance of this office bears repeating: "Being elected president of the class of 1944 is truly an honor. On the occasion of our 60th reunion we were chosen Class of the Year with the following praise: 'ln the pantheon of honored classes, none stands taller, none has been honored so often and none stands as brightly as this remarkable class.' "
We thank Harry for his service and look forward to the next four years with Bill.
