"Serious snow" finally arrived mid-February and very cold temperatures as well. However, the cold did not deter skiers who came in droves to the delight of ski areas looking to make up for lost time.
The Outing Club Carnival crew had to bring snow from afar for the center of the Green statue. A big white bunny off a ski jump, the theme this year being Alice in Wonderland. With only Middlebury Carnival left, Dartmouth ski teams had won at five.
The class of' 29 has lost two widows, Adelaide Quebman (John) and Katie Black (Dick "Blinker"). Adelaide, whom Rip had known since childhood, celebrated her 100th birthdayin September 2005 and died this past year. She was a loyal Connecticut College alumna (as is one of my daughters and granddaughters).
Katie, a Barnard graduate, died late December 2006, and we attended a memorial vice for her mid-February in Hanover's St. Thomas Episcopal Church, where she and Dick worshipped since retiring to Hanover. Years ago Katie designed all the altar rail and chapel kneelers, printed the design on canvas to be needlepointed by parishioners and friends. Christina Dickey (John) did one. These are no longer used as Kneelers but are displayed on a specially built ledge in the church. Katie and Dick spent much of his career in South America, and she wrote a book, The Sun in the North, of those years. The senior center in Hanover is named for Dick, as Katie donated a substantial sum to have it built. It is a wonderful addition to Hanover life, seeing daily use.
Rip does the verses/poems, and for this issue:
"If words I write Are recondite Or tending to be sloppy I'm too impressed To be your guest In 50 thousand copies."
