Spring came late this year, and in Hanover it snowed during Class Officers meetings in April. While it was still very cold in May for Alumni Council, the snow had given way to rain. At the council there was a great group of Black Alumni at Dartmouth led by Rocky Whitaker '74.
Rip wrote him: "Why must my black friends segregate And club with just their peers? There'll be no need if they'll just wait Another hundred years!" Can anyone tell us what happened to Lenoir Hall Cooke, our only(?) black classmate? We last heard he was teaching at Shaw University in Raleigh.
Commencement was blessed with glorious weather and two of the finest speeches ever by joint valedictorians each with 3.9 plus grade scores. The Green was a sea of proud families and friends as the procession of faculty and graduates marched in. The prime minister of Finland was the speaker, and he, along with five others, received honorary degrees.
We enjoyed visiting with many returnees at that time, and during reunion week.
During the spring several classmates and widows died: Harriet Adams (Fred E.), Stan Friedberg, Harry Lewis, Alice Mayher (Phil Jr.), Edward Swift, Millard Tucker. Our sincere sympathy to their families.
To these notes Rip adds, "The ancient Greeks were wont to speak Of better days and doings. The Roman Forum bewailed decorum And feared the road to ruin. So, in our time of crooks and crime, Were old days best, dare we aver? They were."
