How many of you guys remember what happened 75 years ago—this past winter in 1932? Lake Placid just celebrated the 75th anniversary of the 1932 Olympic Winter Games. In 2002 Jack Shea, our classmate, and his family became the first family with three generations of Olympians—and it all began in 1932 at Lake Placid when Jack Shea captured gold medals in the 500 and 1,500 speed-skating events. His son Jim went on to compete as a Nordic skier at the 1964 Winter Olympics and his grandson Jim Jr. then completed the Olympic family trio when he slid to a skeleton gold medal at the Salt Lake City Olympics.
And now lets turn to medicine. What is a healthy person? Is someone who shows no outward signs of disease necessarily healthy? "No," argues Dr. Michael Spron who is the Oscar M. Cohn '34 Professor of Pharmacology and of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. What if the way to win the war on cancer is not to cure tumors but to keep them from forming in the first place?
