Two notes passed on by chief fundraiser Bing Donaldson call for comment: first a hand-scrawled note by Charlie Donovan that defied translation but had attached to it two thoughtful letters (typed) reminiscing about Charlies prep school days at the Hill School with Larned Waterman also enclosed was a photo of the Phi Bets of the class of 43. The other, a note from Powell Groner telling Bing not to "put me in the ground until I croak." Powell, despite a stroke and other complications, hasn't lost his sense of humor and is looking forward to getting back on the golf course.
I'm indebted to Herb Marx, Bill Jones and Bob Ehinger for keeping me posted and up-to-date on departed classmates. Recent '43 talent lost: Bob McQueen, Mort Pechter (remember his marvelous underwater photography of the Red Sea shown at our 50 th?), Ted Haskell and John Middendorf. Our condolences to their families. Our mini Cape Cod gathering fell through the cracks this year—the excuse: time and numbers. Perhaps in 2009 we will do better.
This column is my swan song. I want all to know it's been a great ride for 15 years. I thank you all for feeding me enough gossip and news to make the column an easy writing chore. Keep well!
