Around Christmastime last year I had a pleasant surprise—an evening telephone call from Scott Mitchell, who is still living in Salisbury, North Carolina, and plays some tennis (I did not quiz him on his current ranking; at one point he was seeded No. 1 in the state seniors). I chided him on his failure to make a '43 reunion and his response was that covering visits to see his children (he has a "parcel" and they are scattered) doesn't give him much free time. Scott was a bit down in the mouth as three close friends, including a tennis partner, had died in quick succession. He mentioned talking to Ray McMahon and Bing Donaldson recently. Speaking of the latter, Bing shares my occasional frustrations with college records regarding classmates' deaths as he solicits contributions to the Alumni Fund. One whose well-being both of us are seeking information about is Ray Colby.
On an upbeat note, Bing sent me a copy of Bob Costello's Christmas card—the latter obviously has lost none of his creative skills or imagination! I was delighted to hear from Mort Pechter via way of a desk calendar with a note that he and Alese remain busy, but I trust diving in the Red Sea is not on their current agenda.
The winter edition of Dartmouth Medicine carried a page of pictures that included the smiling faces of Ruth and Paul Young attending a Med School function. Paul, who missed last fall's mini because of health problems, looked hale and hearty. Louise and I just returned from San Diego and an "Aussie" reunion of four couples. We had a great time but I was sure glad that one of the "younger" members did the driving! Southern California traffic is something else!
Looking ahead to a 43 mini on Cape Cod this summer, we'll try to get it together by telephone and gather either at the Donaldson or Brooks residence. On a more formal note the fall mini in Hanover will be the weekend of the Yale game, October 6-8. Two deaths to report: James A. Dinsmoor and Thomas J. Munn. Our condolences to the families. Stay well!
