Here is some news from Gail Chicoine Richards. Gail is working at AuthorSmart, a company that supports authors (both aspiring and already published) with resources and education to help them make the best decisions as they create, publish and market. She is very excited about her company's participation in the Book Expo America (BEA) this year. The Book Expo will be held in Los Angeles from May 29 to June 1. She will be at booth 451 at the Book Expo and would welcome any fellow '84s (and any other Dartmouth alums that may be in attendance) to stop by to say hello. She will also be hosting a live, on-location guided tour experience for authors new to BEA or for those who want to get down to business. 'Any '84s interested in details can e-mail me (gail@authorsmart.com). I'd love to have some '84s as part of this group."
Gail and her husband, Paul Richards '85, live in Colorado with their teenage sons Parker (17) and Mitchell (13). They are "weathering the woes of driving, shaving and girlfriends." Gail is also volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, in particular the Women Build initiative.
Gail keeps in touch via e-mail with Dan Kirsch, who is living in central Massachusetts putting his time and talent into fundraising and development projects. Per Gail: "Based on shared photos, Dan has two of the most adorable kids on the planet, Elijah and Ben." Gail also recently tracked down Leah Daughtry via Facebook. They are making plans to meet in Denver while Leah is there running the Democratic National Convention.
I was informed that classmate Tim Golden, a senior writer for The New York Times, was to present the 2008 Joe Alex Morris Jr. Memorial Lecture at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard on February 21.The Morris Lecture honors the foreign correspondent of The Los AngelesTimes who was killed in February 1979 while covering the Iranian Revolution in Tehran. Tim has written extensively about the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and at U.S. run prisons abroad in Afghanistan.
Tim was a Nieman Fellow in the class of 1996 and currently serves as a member of the Nieman advisory board. Prior to joining The NewYork Times Tim worked for The Miami Herald and United Press International. He was a member of the Times team that won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for articles about drug corruption in Mexico. He also shared a 1987 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for stories on the Iran-Contra affair while working at TheMiami Herald. Tims stories on the drug trade received awards from the Overseas Press Club and the Nancy Dickerson Whitehead Prize. Tim, I would welcome you to guest write for the '84 notes anytime!
