Without further ado, Ken Gordon’s update (in his own words):
“Things are well in the Nutmeg State (Connecticut). I have recently discovered this new thing on the Internet called Facebook, which actually lets you communicate with folks in different parts of the country. It is pretty neat, I highly recommend it for those living in the Stone Age as I once did.
“I attended my first Dartmouth Lawyers Association meeting this past fall in Washington, D.C. I served on a panel discussing the topic ‘Sports, Ethics and Media: Can They Peacefully Co-Exist?’ The panel included Ed Burns ’85 (VP of operations at MLB), Russ Granik ’69 (Former deputy commissioner of the NBA), Aine Donovan (executive director of Dartmouth Ethics Institute) and myself. Very lively debate and tough questioning from the audience—what do you expect from a room full of lawyers?
“In 2008 I finally caught up with a few of my Dartmouth classmates that I had been wondering about—Annamaria Steward (associate dean of students at UDC David A. Clarke School of Law in D.C.) and Andre Grant (physician with a specialty in sports medicine at Union Memorial who works extensively with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens).
“In addition I received a holiday card from Michael Greene (a.k.a. the original ‘Dapper Don’) alongside his beautiful new wife. Congrats on your first year anniversary!
“Alison Cares recently gave birth to her second child—Tucker Johnson. My wife, Christy Horner, daughter Julia and I are planning to trek down to meet the little guy in person in early January 2009. I regularly speak with Dan Glazer and am beginning to suspect his infant daughter has pretty much started to run the show at his house since the man has not been seen since her birth. Please put out an APB on his whereabouts.” (Secretary’s Note: I can confirm a Dan sighting this past November 2008. He, Michele and Molly are doing very well and Molly is absolutely adorable!)
Andrea Useem also sent a great update, extolling the virtues of Facebook for keeping up with Dartmouth folks. “I’ve reconnected with so many people, including people in other classes. Just today I was looking at pictures of Charmaine Oakley and her two beautiful kids! I’m pretty settled now in northern Virginia. After three years of freelancing writing, editing and blogging (including creating my own site, www.religionwriter.com) this fall I started a new job at Washington Post Digital, producing a new feature called ‘On Leadership,’ an online discussion forum and video series. The highlight so far has been doing makeup for Henry Paulson ’68. I found out too late that he’s actually a Dartmouth alum! But I’ve sworn that if we get to interview Timothy Geithner ’83 I’ll definitely mention the Dartmouth connection. Maybe that will ‘stimulate’ him.” (Secretary’s Note: Laugh out loud.)
“My kids seem like they are getting so big: Zak, Adam and Moses are now 7, 5 and 3, respectively. I do dream of having a girl, but that just seems like such an irrational act to have another. Thirty-five is feeling old! My husband teaches English as a second language at the high school nearby. We dream of living overseas again (we lived in Muscat, Oman, for two years after we married) but that’s probably in the distant future.”
Thank you to Ken and Andrea for the awesome updates! And as a recent member, let me add my voices to theirs in trumpeting the marvel that is Facebook. How else will you know your far-flung friends’ favorite ice cream flavors or what Muppets they most closely resemble?
