The passing of another summer has brought mostly good news, but not all of it has been good. Dr. Eugene Serafin died on July 13 following a long period of illness. Eugene had practiced surgery in New Haven, Conn.
This June Don Meads was elected chairman and chief executive officer of Certain-teed Products Corporation. His most recent appointment is just one in a succession of major achievements in the fields of international finance and management. Following military service, Don was associated with the New York Life Insurance Company where he served as a vice president. His next move was in 1961 to Investors Diversified Services, Inc. He became president before leaving in 1965 to join International Basic Economy Corporation. Again he was appointed chairman and chief executive officer before joining INA Corporation as executive vice president in 1971. This past March he was elected chief financial officer. In addition, he now sits on nine major corporation boards. Don's career has been outstanding and he deserves much credit for these major accomplishments.
Several classmates have been deeply involved in political activities during this past year. JohnStorrs was chairman of the primary campaign for Bob Straub '43 who was seeking the Democratic nomination for the governorship of Oregon. It is not surprising that Bob won with John at the helm. Jim Erwin, formerly Attorney General for the State of Maine, is the Republican candidate for that state's governorship.
Congratulations are extended to Jane andRalph Falk who became the parents of a baby girl, named Alexandra, born on May 7.
Dave Davis has a son named Brad who is better know as Buff. He graduated this June from Dartmouth with an impressive record of accomplishments which included the presidency of both Psi Upsilon fraternity and the Interfraternity Council. He also was a member of Green Key and served as an administrative intern in the dean's office. Noteworthy is the fact that Buff is the most recent of a long succession of family graduates from Dartmouth. About 100 years ago his great-grandfather earned his AB degree and was appointed life trustee from 1901 to his death in 1905. His great uncle Robert Davis graduated in 1904 and his grandfather Edward Aron Davis graduated in 1913. BufFs father Dave is a purveyor of weather instruments and a member of the great Class of '42. There have been several Dartmouth graduates on the maternal side, too, but the record is most impressive without adding more. The next Davis will have difficulty trying to emulate past family records at Dartmouth.
Your class secretary currently is spending six months as a consultant to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan. There are six other Americans on the staff of whom two are Dartmouth graduates. Dr. Gilbert Beebe '33 is Chief of Epidemiology and Statistics and Dr. Michael Danzig '66 is an investigator and physician for the adult health examination program. Sheldon Finch '75 is doing course work in Hiroshima during the fall term. There is little opportunity for a class reunion, but there are almost enough Dartmouth graduates and undergraduates to form a Dartmouth Club.
Buzz Cassidy and his staff of many loyal class agents have completed another highly successful Alumni Fund drive. The results were extraordinarily fine during this year of economic recession. Each of us is deeply appreciative of their outstanding work.
