THE SUMMER SEASON of the Chicago alumni is always an eventful one. The golf outing, and particularly the annual picnic at Louie Leverone's farm, plus the undergraduate luncheon are the three principal highlights.
The golf party this year was held August 9 at Knollwood Country Club, north of Chicago, and near most of the north shore suburbs. Whether it was the location or something else, this year's outingdrew one of the largest crowds of any of the annual golf days. In addition to the 56 who played golf, many more came out after work to have dinner and witness the awarding of prizes. Harold Foreman Jr. '35 won the President's Trophy with low gross; Carleton Blunt '26 won the Hawley Trophy for low net; and three Bills, Abbott '27, Embree '21 and Morton '32 tied for the blind bogey.
On the eve of the All-Star football game in which Bob McLeod was one of the Stars against the New York Giants, 60 of the Chicago faithfuls drove to Louie Leverone's ('04) farm for a delicious steak dinner picnic. The enjoyment of Louie's cuisine was preceded by a ball game, horseshoe pitching, swimming, canoeing, and a draining of the ever-present beer barrel. The climax was capped by a roaring fire and vociferous song. Many of the younger graduates fail to attend these picnics, perhaps because they feel they cannot take time off from work. Those who have attended, however, find that they needn't leave their offices early but that they can get to the picnic in plenty of time for dinner. Young graduates please note—for next year.
Chicago is very proud to send about 30 fine freshmen to Hanover this fall. Before they left, a luncheon was held for them and their fathers on September 13 at the University Club. These luncheons are an annual affair and seem to be very successful in acquainting the new boys with one another and with the Chicago alumni.
