ON FRIDAY EVENING, April 25th, they began to gather in the combined Yale- Dartmouth quarters of the University Club as early as four o'clock. There was a growing air of expectation that reached its climax at about 5:40 with the arrival of the one and only President Ernest Martin Hopkins. There had been several false sallies prior to this time with under-cover rumors to the effect that "He's tied up in a conference with President Roosevelt and cannot get away," but he got there, and on time.
Round table discussion ensued for the next three-quarters of an hour with various and sundry groups taking part. Finally, the group disbanded to dress for dinner, and then came the official 54th Annual Dinner and Meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Philadelphia, with some 120 graduates and undergraduates in attendance.
The following officers were elected for the year 1941-1942: President, Donald D. Rogers '2O; vice president, Richard R. Frame '2B; secretary, Henry B. King Jr. '33; treasurer, Ernest Hedler '35.
Philip Chase 'O7, Philadelphia's new member of the Alumni Council then said a few words, followed by A 1 Dickerson, on the current Hanover outlook. Then came the piece de resistance of the evening in the form of one of the best speeches any of us in Philadelphia ever heard President Hopkins give. That's saying a lot!
The entire film of the Dartmouth-Cornell football game was then shown, and even with the presence of Lou Young Jr. in the flesh to spark the pictures proved almost an anti-climax after President Hopkins.
We in Philadelphia wish to know if anything has ever been done in the way of taking notes of speeches just such as the one we had in Philadelphia. I am certain that the experience undergone by the alumni body here was one which could well be shared if the President's speech could be reprinted. I am certain if we are lucky enough next year to have the same list of speakers, secretarial shorthand will be made of the occasion.
I would welcome any comments from other alumni secretaries along these lines.
