Not long ago a very official looking document reached us, and until we opened it up, we were apprehensive of what military rules we were to be accused of breaking. But a sigh of relief and, as a matter of fact, definite pleasure, came upon reading the message through:
It seems we were definitely off the beam in reporting last month that Buffalo would be Ens. Jocko Morrison's station. He is down at Atlanta (Office of Inspector of Naval Material, 494 Spring St., N.W.), and has this to say: "My work is quite interesting. My duty is acting as Interim Finance Officer and Claims Officer in the Contract Termination Division of this Southeastern District office, which includes N. C., S. C., Tenn., Ga., Alabama, Miss, and Florida. My job will entail some traveli ng, and I've already completed a short trip up into N. C. which took me through the Great Smoky Mountains, and it was beautiful. Was in Washington for ten days and saw more '36ers than I have in a month of Sun: days. Had lunch with Barry Sullivan on several occasions and on one "Huff" Huffman joined us as he was in town on business. Another day had lunch with George McCleary (Bureau of Ordnance, Personnel Division) and on another day lunched with Cliff Porter, Bill Yelverton and Sev Vass. Then one day last week down here by chance found out Bill Ferguson was in town, which was later made even more pleasant by having Clark Sorenson and his wife join us. He (Clark) has been with Goodrich nearby and was leaving that day for Cleveland where he is starting on a new job with a new company " And that's about all from Jocko, except to thank, on his behalf, the large number of you who have sent in checks for class dues. The plan of paying $7 for the next two years is practical, and your check or money order will, indeed, be appreciated.
Capt. Clay Mellor, reported missing since his Liberator crashed in France, April 1, stopped off in Washington, D. C., recently after having spent some five months fighting with the Maquis, blowing up bridges, hiding in Paris as a peasant, etc. He ought to have some tale—and we're mighty glad that he's here to tell it... . some day.
Ross Woodbridge is doing a bang-up job as Red Cross Assistant Field Director somewhere in New Guinea Pinky Conklin is stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. Having graduated from Cadre school, he is awaiting a class to teach. (Probably by this time, he's in the professorial groove!) .. . . Fess Mack, with the Seabees, is in Guam Lt. (jg) Dick Jewell of the Coast Guard, "has at last realized his ambition to go to sea," according to a note from his wife, "and is now on an LST." .... You j:an write to Pvt. FredShurts by getting his addres's from me or the Records office, Hanover Bob Tyler got his two silver bars while stationed at Selman Field, Monroe, La., where he is an assistant post adjutant. .... A local newspaper informs us that Lt. EdChamberlain recently was home on leave. Due to his long silence, here's an up-to-dater on Ed: He enlisted two and a half years ago and was in Panama. More recently, he was transferred to Pacific duty and, as skipper of a sub-chaser, took part in the Saipan and Tinian campaigns RayBuilter is still instructing in communications at Fort Sill (Okla.), Field Artillery School. Most of his time has been spent as an umpire on field problems preparatory for troop duty. He will have left Sill on December 1, for ??? Ted Olson is out on duty on a LST Colin Soule returned to his pre-Dartmouth alma mater, Governor Dummer Academy, Mass., to assist in administration.
In a letter to Jocko M., Tommy Thompson reveals, "I spent a year over in Africa from April 1943 to April 1944 as an auditor for the .12th Air Force Service Command, and was at Casablanca most of the time. Only '36er I ran into was HankMayo, and I met him the first night I landed. I got back here (Detroit), about six months ago, and am now_ back in public accounting with Collins and Buri, the same firm I was with before the war. I am still unmarried and seem to have no prospects at present. However, just being back in the good old U. S. A. is all that I ask for "
And that's what we all wish for all of us—being back in the good old U. S. A. Let's hope that '45 will bring that wish nearer to fulfillment.
